Chamomile is a sedative, anti-spasmodic, digestive and anti-inflammatory herb. It also has anti-bacterial properties. Its affinities are for the nervous, digestive, urinary and musculo-skeletal systems and for skin. Can also be soothing and calming for anxious animals.
Chamomile's specific uses are for treating asthma, allergies, bronchitis, stomach-ache and gingivitis. It is also excellent for soothing itchy, dry skin, treating bruises and healing eczema.
Chamomile's usefulness in expelling worms is often overlooked in favor of faster acting herbs (such as wormwood, black walnut hulls or garlic), but it really should not be. While it doesn't work as quickly as the other anthelmintics, it does work, especially for roundworms and whipworms. And, it offers anti-inflammatory activities that help counteract the effect parasites often have on intestinal mucosa.
Please note: those allergic to ragweed should avoid chamomile; otherwise it is very safe and a good choice for long term applications.
